Mesalamine is used for ulcerative colitis, colon cancer. Microsponges are porous, polymeric microspheres that are designed to deliver a pharmaceutical active ingredient efficiently at the minimum dose and also to, modify drug release. The present work was aimed at designing microsponge based colon specific drug delivery system containing mesalamine, Eudragit RS-100, Eudragit RL-100 based microsponges containing drug in varying amounts were prepared using quasi-emulsion solvent diffusion method. The microsponzes were characterized for production yield, drug content, entrapment efficiency, surface morphology, FTIR, DSC, particle size analysis. The drug release profiles of the microsponge formulations showed matrix type of drug release. In-vitro study revealed that application of mesalamine microsponge formulation caused a significant release after administration of mesalamine microsponge formulation.
